"More Than an Athlete"
Mental Health affects millions of people around the world. Some just hide it better than others. Mental health is extremely important to me which is why I wanted my first personal project to highlight this topic. Being a former athlete, I know that the balance between life, school and sports can be challenging and I wanted to emphasize that sometimes it is okay to not be okay.
Below I took two portraits each of six of my friends and also interviewed them. We discussed how mental health affected us when playing our respective sports growing up, and how it affects us now in our everyday lives.
"Speak up; You never know what someone else may be going through and how you could help them."
"Don't be afraid to admit your faults."
"It is important to have people who are for you and who will always support you through your good and bad days
'Seeking help is very important and is a essential to finding hope and finding peace."
"It is important to learn about mental health to make sure you are aware of your mental health before it gets too bad."
"Love yourself no matter what sport you play. Most things we fixate on in sports are miniscule, learn how to give yourself compassion."
